Advanced Qualities for Effective Leadership in Early Childhood Education

Leaders are "agents of change." Often people complain about the ways things are...but if change is to occur at all it must begin somewhere or within someone. Leaders envision a better future and become the change agent that makes this future possible. This is true of a business, a community or one's personal life. It all starts with an individual choice to begin a process of change. It has been said that we must become the change we wish to see.

One writer (Dessler, 2004) identified the Five Traits, which he deemed as the foundations to leadership personalities. In order for a person to be a true, effective leader, she/he should have some level of extraversion, emotional stability, agreeableness, conscientiousness and must be open to experiences (p. 257).

This section provides an interactive way to learn about the characteristics of effective leaders in the field of Early Childhood Development. You will be asked to select which of the two responses are the best descriptors of leadership.
